Penguin visual effects

Compiz screenshot — the cube in action

If by any chance you are one of the two or three people in the world that missed the Compiz project, my advice is to try and search YouTube for the “compiz” tag. I find this video is especially attractive, maybe for the sound track and the editing.

I think I should find the time to install and tune Compiz on my laptop only to show it to the next people bothering me with the fabulous new and very original visual effects of Windows Vista.

Of course all these graphics on the desktop is not very useful, but here the issue is: why to pay a whole lot of money to buy an operating system full of bugs and viruses? Furthermore: Microsoft last advertising is heavily based on Windows Vista visual effects, that are ridiculous if compared with Compiz, and not that original if compared with Apple’s OSX.

Maybe Microsoft decided to quit the operating system market?

Consider that there are lots of downgradings to XP.
This could not be a real issue for Microsoft. You can remember that it happened also when XP was launched (ou of the window, we can say it).
In fact, due to some innovations in XP (especially in the networking) many companies downgraded to Win2000 (and some decided to keep Windows 98 or NT4) because of compatibility of programs.

This time downgrades are also for consumers.
Vista is having lots of problems and is loosing customers because of the graphical interface Aero, too heavy and too hungry, and too expensive too because the version of Vista that is shipped with new pc is often the basic one, so for having Aero customer must buy an upgrade.
Other problems are created by lacks of drivers. Not all hardware companies have produced drivers for Vista, so people must install XP to have the hardare working.
It is possible to continue in this way for a long long time.

Anyway, in a short I will download Ubuntu 7.10 that should have Compiz-fusion, to test it.
I kept on my PC Beryl for a while and I have to say that effects were really good, and every people that saw those effects running asked me where they could find it to install on their home PC.
Next time, I hope, I can say: «take this» givin them a CD with ubuntu and no more.
